Therapists for college students near New York University
Dr. Marguerat Degaard is a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her academic journey started in Switzerland with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Geneva. Wanting to combine her passion for dance and the art of therapy, she came to the US and obtained a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy in 1986 from Hunter College, NYC. She worked as a Dance Therapist for 14 years, developing, implementing and supervising creative art therapies programs. In 2005 Dr. Marguerat Degaard received her PhD from Adelphi University. Since then she worked in hospital settings adding teaching and training to her work as a clinician. Throughout the years, she continued to receive education and training in different areas of interest. She has been in private practice part time and full time since 2015. Her approach is integrative and flexible greatly influenced and informed by her artistic background. Her many years of work in the mental health field has taught her profound humility in the face of the deepest layers of humanity. She views psychotherapy as an in-depth collaborative and creative process which expands and frees self-expressions allowing untold stories to be told, contradictions to be bridged, and emotions to be touched or re-touched towards richer and healthier self-understanding and life experiences. She offers psychotherapeutic services in English and French. Her method will encourage and mobilize what she calls the 3 Cs in her patients, i.e. courage, curiosity and creativity. She will support the courage it takes to embark on the therapeutic journey, she will foster a deep sense of curiosity in one’s experiences that help shape one’s humanity through self-reflection and self-exploration work, and the use of creativity to allow new spaces to open and be expanded.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with over 20 years of clinical experience. My approach to therapy is collaborative, and geared toward reaching a better understanding of the relationship between your emotions, behaviors, and experiences. I see the therapeutic relationship as the foundation for exploration and growth through fostering a safe space, where you're able to freely express your thoughts and feelings. This process allows for a deeper understanding of the dynamics that may be influencing your current difficulties. In addition to my other clinical expertise, I am also trained in psychosomatic psychoanalysis, and have experience working with individuals who present with physical symptoms and illnesses. I address the complex interplay between psychological and somatic factors, and provide a comprehensive approach that considers the unique needs of my patients. If you're seeking a compassionate and collaborative therapeutic experience that can help you gain insight and navigate personal challenges, I'm here to support you. My consulting room is welcoming to anyone who wants to come for therapy, irrespective of their sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, culture or gender.
We offer affirming psychotherapy and sex therapy for individuals, couples, multiple-partner relationships, and poly and leather families. We are experts in alternative sexualities, specializing in working with adults in the kink/BDSM, polyamorous/non-monogamous, trans/gender-nonconforming/non-binary, LGBQIA+, and sex work communities. We work with those who live openly and out; and those who have more conservative and private lifestyles. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including holistic, person-centered, collaborative, empowerment-focused, trauma-informed, IFS, DBT, and EMDR. We welcome people of every ability, age, gender, national origin, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation, and we cultivate space for conversations that de/reconstruct whiteness, and cultivate positive racial and intersectional identities. People seek therapy for many reasons, including: a deeper understanding of identity or sexuality; difficulty adjusting to relationship difficulties or traumatic experiences; anxiety and/or depression; sexual functioning issues; compulsive thoughts or behavior; and/or changes in relationship structure or power dynamic. Most people decide to work with my practice because of my specialized training and experience, or because they feel more comfortable speaking to a therapist with first-hand knowledge of alternative identities and lifestyles.

My philosophy of therapy is collaborative and holistic, and I aim to meet my clients where they’re at to inspire change. I am most passionate about working with queer people who have difficulty being fully authentic. We can work together to dismantle the stories and systems that have impacted this and cultivate greater self-compassion and self-awareness in who you are. In therapy with me, my clients feel seen and encouraged to show up as their authentic selves. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my expertise is in relationships and seeing things through a systemic lens. I have experience working with folks with anxiety or depression that can interrupt their ability to live a full life, sometimes facing unsteady relationships and hoping for more security. Together, we can work to make sense of difficult relationships, own and advocate for your feelings and needs in relationships, and identify and set boundaries with others. My experience is in working with teens and adults in the context of individual, couples, or family therapy.
I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience conducting Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy (CBT.) I am also an expert in the early diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders and have worked with parents and siblings of individuals presenting with ASD, ADHD, and other conditions.

Do you hide your feelings from yourself and others, even without intending to? Maybe certain emotions were discouraged or disallowed during your childhood. Maybe you have endured traumatic experiences that make some feelings seem dangerous. Maybe you have been impacted by systemic inequality or prejudice as a result of your identity. For these reasons and others, you may avoid noticing and expressing sadness, loneliness, or anger. Instead, you try to keep yourself busy, mask your pain with jokes and laughter, or rationalize that “it’s not so bad” or “others have it worse.” Rejecting these parts of yourself comes at a very steep cost. Efforts to defend against your feelings can result in depression, anxiety, emptiness, and many other symptoms. Most importantly, remaining hidden compromises relationships. After all, it is hard to connect meaningfully with others when you are disconnected from yourself. Slowing down to make contact with your true feelings is worth the effort. In therapy, we will work together to observe and name the ways in which you have been ignoring your inner experience. As you become aware of your defenses, you will learn to deploy them flexibly rather than automatically. You will grow to tolerate and maybe even appreciate the feelings that used to feel frightening or shameful. With time, you can come to understand yourself better and feel a sense of ease being you.
